🥶 Coldest Air of the Season Hits Elwood This Weekend!

Fall has officially arrived in full force across Madison County! Following a mild Friday, a brisk Canadian cold front is driving south into Central Indiana, setting the stage for the coldest air mass we’ve seen since last spring.

What You Need to Know:

  • Timing: Late Saturday night (October 17) through 9:00 AM EDT Sunday morning (October 18).
  • Temperatures: Overnight lows will plunge to around 34°F in town, with outlying rural areas likely touching 30°F–32°F.
  • Impacts: Frost and freezing conditions will kill sensitive outdoor vegetation and bring an end to the growing season.

🌿 How to Protect Your Plants & Property

If you have fall gardens, late-blooming flowers, or tender potted plants, take action before Saturday evening:

  1. Cover Delicate Plants: Use burlap, canvas, or old bedsheets. Secure the edges to the ground to trap warmth radiating from the soil. Avoid plastic touching foliage directly.
  2. Bring Potted Plants Indoors: Move sensitive potted herbs and house plants into a garage or indoors overnight.
  3. Check Hoses & Outlets: Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor spigots to prevent localized freezing in exposed pipe connections.
